Bait and Switch, Thy Name Is Prequel

From the Terminator series to X-Men: First Class to Paranormal Activity, the prequel is here and it's here to stay. Admittedly, I fell for the idea that a prequel was exactly as advertised. Then I saw The Thing prequel and realized that I was duped. Like most of people, I was extremely disappointed with The Thing 2011 because The Thing 2011 was in no way shape or form a prequel; it was a remake. Check out my review on The Thing here.

The Night Before "Who"

There is nothing I hate more than seeing Christmas trees in retail stores in October. Let me celebrate Halloween, please. I saw one store roll out their Christmas trees in September, effectively giving us four months of Christmas. I don't mean to "good ole' day" you, but back in the good ole' days, we didn't put our Christmas tree up until the week of Christmas, sometimes even on Christmas Eve. You'd wake up to presents under the lit tree, which you put up the night before. That was the whole point. Oh how far we've come.

The $50 Million Dollar Man?

2007's I Am Legend is one of my favorite films and I think I'm one of the few people who still likes Will Smith. Despite these facts, I hasten to think that Will Smith, or any actor, is worth a $50 million paycheck. According to Science Fiction World, Will Smith asked for $50 million for the two Independence Day sequels, which would be filmed back to back within a six-month time period. Needless to say Fox declined Smith's request.

The Battle Hymn of Snow White

Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron in dueling roles as the evil queen

It's interesting to compare the two Snow White films side by side. Mirror, Mirror appears to be sweetly whimsical and Julia Roberts plays the wickedly funny queen. Whereas, Snow White and the Huntsman is a much darker tale, with Charlize Theron as the stunningly, fiendish queen.

Tardis Refrigerator

One wonderful fant wants you to keep your custard and fish fingers cool in a tardis refrigerator. (If you live in North America they're called fish sticks) See here.

Did Starz Kill Torchwood?

Sciencefictionworld.com delves into what went wrong with Torchwood in America, as the highly anticipated 4th season lost it's steam halfway through. It's unfortunate, because Torchwood's budget was huge this year. You'd think they could have pulled together a better season. It had a great premise, but a terrible follow-through. I stuck it out, but it was painful.

Will NOT Be Reviewing Twilight: Breaking Dawn Unless Under Duress

My opinion of the Twilight saga, including the most recent installment, Breaking Dawn - Part 1, can be summed up by one of my favorite authors, Anne Rice.
"Lestat and Louie feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun. They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town-- anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful."

The Dull And The Beautiful

THE IMMORTALS
Directed by TARSEM SINGH
Starring HENRY CAVILL, MICKEY ROURKE,
STEPHEN DOURFF, and FRIEDA PINTO

Tarsem Singh, the renowned director of The Fall, directs the Immortals…into the ground. The Immortals is a grotesque spectacle of stunning visual style, 300-like chop scenes, and bad writing. The Immortals stars future SupermanHenry Cavill as the fearsome hero Theseus, but Gerard Butler he is not.

Immortal Beloved

I must say that I'm looking forward to seeing beefcake gone wild this Thursday. Henry Cavill is a little short for Superman, but he looks like a million bucks in Tarsem Singh's new film, The Immortals. This is also Henry's chance to prove leading-man potential before The Man of Steel.

For those unfamiliar with The Immortals, check out the trailer below. Tarsem previously directed The Fall, which is a visual masterpiece. The trailer shows the same intense visual style. Tarsem is also known for his Kubrick-like perfectionism. He told Henry Cavill, in no uncertain terms, that he didn't just want Henry to have a six pack, he wanted an eight pack. No exceptions.
