Upcoming Sequels and Remakes

Alamo Drafthouse - Mondo Mystery Movie - Artist Jesse Philips
The sequel machine is efficient yet predictable. Make the original; churn out a few sequels; reboot; rinse; repeat. Sometimes they don't even wait for the sequel, they just go straight to the reboot, i.e. 'Superman Returns' and 'Daredevil.'

Weekend Movie Picks

Matthew McKeown
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
'Wanted' director Timur Bekmambetov returns to the director's chair with mixed results. Most folks recall that 'Wanted' was a terrible film. No amount of marketing could have saved that dog-faced film. Thankfully Bekmambetov has more to work with in 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.' Revisionist history aside, the subject matter is fun. It's unfortunate that the movie isn't more fun.

Why Does Hollywood Hate Mars?

Total Recall (Alamo Drafthouse Cinema) Tyler Stout
CinestirTV recently created a side by side comparison of both the old and new 'Total Recall' films. And while CinestirTV focuses on the similarities between the two films, I noticed a glaring difference: the location. The new 'Total Recall' is set firmly on earth in "New Asia." New Asia appears to be a 'Fifth Element'-type place with flying cars and sleek robots. The gritty tunnels and hollows of Mars in Paul Verhoeven's classic film are noticeably absent. In fact, 'Total Recall' 2012 will have no mention of Mars at all. Why?

Angelina Jolie As Maleficent

Haven't had your fairy tale fix yet? Then you're in luck. Check out Angelina Jolie as Maleficent in the new live-action 'sleeping beauty' tale told from the perspective of the evil queen. Sleeping Beauty takes a back seat to the queen and the film is appropriately titled 'Maleficent.' Elle Fanning costars as Aurora/Sleeping Beauty.

'Maleficent' is now filming in London and
will be coming to a theater near you in March 2014. If only 'Snow White and the Huntsman' took a page out of this book?

No More Movies Based On Books By Stephanie Meyer

Picture from Hypervocal.com
If you haven't had enough of whiny sparkly teenage love triangles then you're in luck. Stephanie Meyer returns to the big screen with her new book, 'The Host.' 'The Host' is about a parasitic alien race called "souls." These souls possess people, completely erase their identities, and subsequently give them sparkly eyes. There had to be something sparkly in there somewhere.

Happy Trails - New Horror Trailers

Sinister
There are several new horror flicks coming to a theater near you. The scariest (in my opinion) is the haunted house flick 'Sinister' starring Ethan Hawke. Hawke stars as Ellison, a family man who finds old videos of the home's prior residents. What distinguishes 'Sinister' from other haunted house films, is that the house itself isn't haunted. The haunting is specific to certain object(s), namely the found footage. Thankfully this is not a found footage film like 'Paranormal Activity.' Check out the trailer. It looks truly frightening. Resident Evil Retribution - Alice in 'Suburbia!'

New 'Resident Evil 5' trailer looks unlike any of the 'Resident Evil' films before it. Alice wakes up in an idealic suburban environment, married, with children? I hope Milla Jovovich makes these movies until she's 90 years old. This franchise is one of my guilty pleasures.

Doctor Who v. Star Trek Crossover Comic - Finally!

Star Trek: TNG/Doctor Who: Assimilation #5 (Scott & David Tipton with Tony Lee. Art by J.K. Woodward)
The Wikipedia entry has a good synopsis:
Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation2 is an eight-issue limited series comic book written by Scott and David Tipton, with art by J.K. Woodward. The series will be published by IDW Publishing beginning May 2012 and is a cross-over featuring the science-fiction series Doctor Who and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Assimilation2 sees the Eleventh Doctor and his companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams encounter the crew of the USS Enterprise, joining together to stop an alliance between the Borg and the Cybermen.
A Comic Book Blog has a great review of the first edition. The Comics are about $3.99 each and I believe the first few issues have already been made available. This is a must read!

Red Letter Media Asks The Hard Questions About 'Prometheus'

Nourigat 2012 - David, 'Prometheus' parody
I think most people can agree that despite Prometheus' beautiful production values, there was a lot that got lost in translation. All I can say is that Damon Lindelof also wrote for 'Lost,' which explains a lot.

Prometheus Decoded

The weekend is over, so I'm sure everyone has seen 'Prometheus?' If not, not to worry there are no spoilers in this post. You actually have to click on my spoiler page if you want to know (my take) on all of the unanswered questions in 'Prometheus.'
