Watchmen Review

Directed by ZACK SYNDER
Starring PATRICK WILSON, JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN, MALIN AKERMAN,
JACKIE EARLE HALEY, CARLA GUGINO, and MATTHEW GOODE

This film would have been flawless, except for the lack of creativity on the part of director Zack Synder. Synder replicated the comic book scene for scene, which certainly makes for a faithful adaptation, but still leaves something to be desired. There's always room for a director's own interpretation.

Also, there is one especially over the top sex scene, whilst playing the song "Hallelujah." Zack Synder is clearly a chauvinist pig. One seriously questions a director's judgment after something like that. That said, this a good film. 'The Watchmen' is not your typical superhero movie. It's gritty, dark, and full of anti-heroes. The real standout in this film is former child actor, Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach. Haley plays Rorschach with incredible panache and gusto. Incredible, incredible performance.

Plot: One of the costumed heroes of old has been killed. The crew gets back together to find the killer and instead discovers a massive plot. In the meanwhile, the characters fall in love, fight, kill, among other things.

Edit: After the recent release of Sucker Punch in 2011, there is no longer any doubt that Zach Synder has poor judgment.

THREE OUT OF FIVE STARS

  1. Considering that both the nudity and the sex scene were in the graphic novel I'm not sure how you can fault Zach Snyder for having them in the movie. (And the song Halleluah was fitting because it is about sex.)

Do you have a problem with the way Snyder sexualized the men in the movie 300?

  2. Hmmm...I agree with Mariah about the Nite Owl/Silk Spectre sex scene being one of the few wrong-footed notes in this fave flick of mine. To me, 'Hallelujah' is a purely spiritual glorification, one which I've never thought ov in a sexual sense - from Tim Buckley's version thru to that ov John Cale, et al. And, um, whilst not wanting to appear TOO homophobic here - D'uh YES there's a HUGE problem with how Snyder sexualised* the menfolk in 300. 300 is a TOTAL homoerotic stroke flick! Why, I've seen LESS overtly gay pornographic imagery in Al Pacino's "Cruising", by golly by gosh. (*Anglo spelling, so fcuk OFF, little red underline on my screen - grrr. U Americans! Lol)

  3. Yeah, I just thought it was too much. Joss Whedon watched Watchmen for what "not" to do in The Avengers.
