MY BEST & WORST LIST OF 2016

Whew, what a lovely five month hiatus. I'm finally posting my best and worst list for the year 2016. After this post I will probably cocoon again...popping up occasionally. Mind you I am still lurking on everyone's blogs. You may see me pop in every now and then. Although I may not update it often, this blog will continue as long as I watch films and have breath! So hopefully this blog will continue to run for a very long time...albeit intermittently.

Admittedly I have seen a good number of films this past year, but I have not have an opportunity to write about them all. The reasons why are abundant. I am in my late 30s, in grad school, have a 3 year old, a husband, and a full time job. So unfortunately this year, my blog went by the wayside.

I hope you enjoy my best and worst list for 2016. Please share with me yours, agree, or disagree with me in the comments. I look forward to reconnecting with everyone.

I preface my film list by saying that I don't necessarily qualify this list as the best films of the year. They are simply the best films I HAVE seen thus far this past year. I think 2015 was a much better year at the movies. Have I mentioned that 2016 was a bad movie year?

BEST & WORST FILMS OF 2015 - PART 3, WORST FILMS OF THE YEAR

This entry is part 3 of 4 of my best and worst list of 2015. My first post was the best of the best. My second post was the most disappointing. My third post is typically reserved for the worst movies of the year. Unlike the most disappointing list, the films below have very few, if any, redeeming qualities-- be it visuals, direction, writing, or acting. Some of the films are so bad I can't believe someone sober actually wrote it, directed it, or greenlit it. I can't believe I was sober watching them.

It takes a great deal of effort and time to work on these posts. So forgive me, but I don't have the heart or the inclination to write full reviews for the festering pile below. So behold, below is but a simple list with a few giffys for good measure. They are not in any particular order.

BEST & WORST MOVIES OF 2015 - PART 2, BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

If you can imagine the previous post was even longer. I was originally going to make one large best and worst list, but it was just too long. So I decided to split them up into 4 parts. The first part was the best films of 2015. The movies on this list are typically films that have some redeeming qualities, but just didn't make the cut. These films are in the fair to middling range. Before I changed it to the biggest disappointments, these probably would have been titled, "Most Ok Movies." They weren't good and they weren't necessarily bad. So next week you will see my choices for the absolute worst/trashiest/should-have-never-been-made-films of 2015.

BEST & WORST MOVIES OF 2015 - PART 1, BEST OF THE BEST

Tis the season for the best and worst of the year. I started my list in January of 2015 and updated it throughout the year. I was going to publish this in December but there were so many good films released in December that I had to wait a few weeks. I always want to have a list longer than 10 films, but it rarely works out that way. Last year I had 11 films on my list. This year I have 10. Alas, I could only think of 10 films for my best list. The worst movie list is plentiful this year at lucky number 17.

My list originally included a huge smattering of all the best and worst of the year, but it became so long that I decided to split it into 4 parts. So next week you will see my choices for the most disappointing films of 2015 (not to be confused with the worst films of the year).

I of course preface all of my lists by saying that these are the films that I HAVE SEEN. I have not seen 'Spotlight,' which I hear is exceptional. Nor have I seen 'Trumbo,' 'Steve Jobs,' 'The Walk,' 'Beasts of No Nation,' 'Hateful Eight,' or 'Creed.' If I haven't previously reviewed a film I added additional details. If I have previously reviewed the film I didn't see the need to review it again. Instead I provided a brief description with a link to the full review.

Please feel free to agree or disagree with me in the comment section. This is my list. I'm sure you have your own. Thanks.

BEST AND WORST TELEVISION SHOWS OF 2014

This post is a continuation of my best and worst of 2014. This month I'm focused on the best and worst of television. I qualify this as a best and worst list of the television shows that I've seen. I've heard really good things about 'True Detective,' 'Manhattan,' 'Silicon Valley,' 'Fargo,' 'Shameless,' and 'The Affair,' but haven't seen them yet. So I can't speak to any of these shows. Noticeably absent from my list is 'Orange is the New Black,' since I have only seen about one half of the first season. You can see my favorite films of 2014 here.

Best and Worst Movies of 2014

I usually do three separate list every year, but this year I'm consolidating it into one list. One list takes long enough. I've also included a few non-scifi films in my best and worst list this year. Please feel free to add some of your own or disagree with me! First lets start with the meat of the best and worst list...the best movies of the year (in my humble opinion). The films have a scifi or fantasy focus, but there are a few non-scifi/fantasy films on the list this too. If you scroll further down you'll get to the fluff.  Let's start with the best of the best.

Best, Worst, and Ok Movies - Part 2

Time for the second part of the Best, the Worst, and the Just "Ok" Scifi/Fantasy Movies of 2013. The first week I typically highlight the "Just OK" scifi/fantasy films of 2013. You can see that post below or click here. Now it's time for my picks for the WORST scifi/fantasy movies of the year.

Best, Worst, and "Ok" Movies - Part 1

December. Tis' the season. The season for the "Best, the Worst, and the just 'Ok' movies of 2013". The first week I typically highlight the Just "Ok" Scifi/Fantasy Films of 2013. The just "Ok" category is reserved for the scifi/fantasy films that weren't necessarily great, but they weren't bad either. They exist somewhere in between. These are the kind of films you watch only once, you kinda enjoy it, but you wouldn't necessarily buy the DVD. Note: For some reason there a lot of Superhero films on this list. Go figure? I have listed 15 movies that I kinda dig. I didn't love them and I didn't hate them. Feel free to agree or disagree in the comments

Best Scifi Movies Of 2012

Sorry, but January is a dead zone for movies and television. Everyone knows that January is the month Hollywood's for toxic waste dumping ground. Check out the NY Time's article on it. So unless it has Liam Neeson in it, I won't go see it.

Best, Worst, Ok Movies Of 2012 - Part 2

The "Worst" scifi/fantasy movies of 2012
'Chernobyl Diaries' - Basically a bunch of idiots go thrill seeking in a radioactive wasteland. Sounds fun right?  Well besides glowing in the dark, they have mutant humans and wildlife to deal with. Not for me. See the Rotten Tomatoes reviews.

Best, Worst, Ok Movies Of 2012 - Part 1

Just "OK" scifi/fantasy movies of 2012

'The Amazing Spiderman' - Andrew Garfield was great--even better than Toby McGuire, who IMO had been miscast in the earlier Spiderman films. Garfield is who I envisioned as Spiderman. Tall, geeky, smart, yet handsome. But did we really need a Spiderman reboot a few years after the last sequel? I don't think so. The story has been run into the ground. How many times can it be done and redone within a 10 year period? There is some serious franchise fatigue.

Best, Worst, and "Ok" - Part 3

This post is specifically reserved for the best of the best in science fiction this year. These films are a shining example of solid writing, directing, and acting, which is a rarity. Please feel free to add to the list or disagree with me. All in all, I think 2011 was a good year for science fiction. End of line.

Best, Worst, and "Ok" - Part 2

This post is specifically reserved for the worst offenders in science fiction this year. These films are beyond redemption. Please feel free to add to the list or disagree with me. Best scifi films of 2011 coming soon.

Best, Worst, and "Ok" - Part 1

Most films fall in one of three categories: good, bad, and worse. Then there are those films that fall somewhere between good and bad. These are those films. Please feel free to add to the list. Worst scifi films of 2011 coming soon.
