New Obsessions, Film Previews, Geek News, Spoilers + More

Ok, I've recently become obsessed with 'Penny Dreadful' or as Katy playfully refers to it as 'Penny Pornful.' The series started out a little slow for me, but has come along quite nicely. It also gave me a new found love for Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. Green has done some incredible work on this series.. I've always known that she was a good actress, but she has really taken it to the next level. Green's character is complicated, multi-faceted, intense, and tormented. Even though the show itself is a little tongue in cheek, the tragedy that some of the characters endure is profound. It has all of the markings of a great show for me: historical fiction, psychological horror, lush set design, and marvelous actors. The show has a soulfulness that most supernatural shows lack. This 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' knockoff is better than I thought it would be, which is always a pleasant surprise. It does 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' better than 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.' All round top marks from me.

"Meh" to AMC, Yay for Apes, Dr. Who World Tour, Geek News, + Cool Stuff

Over the last few years AMC has gotten a lot of press for their creative television shows--mostly good. I've been actively watching 'The Walking Dead' since its inception and I've also read all of the comics. So I'm typically excited when AMC develops a new show. As a geek and a history buff, I'm drawn to shows like 'Halt and Catch Fire' and 'Turn.' I'm also drawn to watch anything with Lee Pace or Jamie Bell. So in that regard, AMC has effectively fooled me, not once but twice this year. First with 'Turn' and now with 'Halt and Catch Fire.'

New 'Gotham' Series, 'Godzilla' Growth Chart, + Cool Stuff!

Via Neatorama
See how 'Godzilla' has grown through the years. Yes I'm a little obsessed with 'Godzilla' right now, but I'd rather see a million Godzilla's than the new monstrosity from Bryan Singer, 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' And no, I'm not referring to Singer's recent legal troubles. I never comment on such things. I have not liked Bryan Singer for years. Singer routinely butchers comics, throws them in the trash, then proceeds to burn them. He also has no brand loyalty. He is open to destroying both Marvel and DC Comics alike. I do like Marvel ok, but I'm a DC fan through and through. If you're a comic book fan, you will eventually develop some sense of brand loyalty or preference. Ergo, Singer is not a comic book fan, and he has said as much. Hugh Jackman said that Singer banned comics on the sets he works on. I don't know. It's kinda important to know the source material in my opinion. It doesn't have to be exact, but it should capture the spirit the comic book. A good balanced example is Joss Whedon's 'Avengers.'

Thrones Fun, Jlaw in Mystique Movie?, Cosplay, + More Geek News

Game of Thrones
Between the months of April and June, there will be lots of Thrones talk. As the season premiere debuted this past Sunday, this week was particularly plentiful for 'Game of Thrones' spoofs and memorabilia. I typically don't do full reviews of television shows or films anymore, but I will post something I find interesting or humorous. If you want to see a great recap of this week's episode, head over to Sati's. She has a great review of 'Two Swords.'

Rabid Fandom, 'GoTs' AutoTune, Reboots, Spoilers, + Trailers

This is my favorite 'Game of Thrones' autotune from @musicalscience, appropriately titled, 'The Dragon's Daughter.' It has all of your favorite characters singing their little hearts out. Yay. It actually has a cool little beat to it.

'Rosemary's Baby' Remake, GoTs Exhibit, Wonder Woman Shoes! + Links

Bleeding Cool
Ok, I'm working on some really great posts, but I haven't quite finished them yet, so in the meantime, I'm going to recap 'My Favorite Things' today...again. I've just seen so many great things lately!

Zoe Saldana is the new Mia Farrow in the made for television remake of 'Rosemary's Baby.' You know I like Zoe Saldana, but I don't know how to feel about this one. I'm not a Mia Farrow fan, but this goes into that (very plentiful) category of: DID THIS REALLY NEED TO BE REMADE? 'Rosemary's Baby' is a classic horror film, like 'Carrie.' Which was also (unsuccessfully)  remade last year. You can see my take on last year's 'Carrie' here. I of course will still watch it. Patrick J. Adams of 'Suits' plays Rosemary's dastardly husband in this version. It will be a four-part mini-series, which seems a little long to me. Ok. I really need to stop complaining. Moving on...

Peter Capaldi, Cosmos Returns, GoTs Photos, Anne Rice, & A Killer Cat

Ok, I've seen a bunch of stuff today that doesn't necessarily deserve it's own blog post, but the combination of all of these things, certainly deserves a blog post. These are things that made me say yay today!

Peter Capaldi, Peter Capaldi, Peter Capaldi. Some folks may not know why people are so excited about Capaldi as 'Doctor Who,' but Capaldi has been a longtime character actor and he's a huge 'Doctor Who' fan. He's quite popular in some circles and there's nothing better than a true 'Doctor Who' fan, playing 'Doctor Who.' This is always a plus.

The Red Wedding - Lego Style

Via Lego Literature
After the release of the very successful 'Lego Movie,' Legos are suddenly all the rage...again. (I remember playing with these in 1985, but everything eventually comes 'round again). Now some enterprising Lego fan has come up with the novel concept of reenacting famous film and television scenes with Legos of course. My favorite reenactment has to be the Red Wedding from the 'Game of Thrones.' If you haven't seen Season 3 of 'Game of Thrones' or read the third book in the series, 'A Storm of Swords,' then DON'T SCROLL DOWN. See Lego Literature's blog for the rest of the movies scenes. It's worth the click!

INSIDE 'GAME OF THRONES' SEASON 4 + SPOILERS

Production Design Featurette - Season 4

Watch a behind the scenes look at 'Game of Thrones' with Production Designer Deborah Riley. Riley created (COUNT THEM) 104 new sets for 'Game of Thrones' Season 4. This doesn't include all of the old standby sets. The featurette is only about 2-1/2 minutes long, but well worth the watch. The set designs and visual landscapes are unlike anything else on television right now. It should come as no surprise that each episode of 'Game of Thrones' cost somewhere around $6 million to make.

Sci-Fi Art by Mike Wrobel

Today I came across a rather cool 'X-Files' collage by Artist Mike Wrobel of Deviant Art. Wrobel has done some rather unique pieces of some of my favorite shows (excluding 'True Blood,' which I now hate watch). 'Game of Thrones,' 'Alien,' 'True Blood,' 'Breaking Bad,' and 'The Walking Dead,' just to name a few. You can see all of his collages here. I've listed my favorites below. Wrobel has reminded me that I need to rewatch 'The X-Files.' Now with companies like Netflix and Amazon, streaming is easier than ever. I recently rewatched all of 'Battlestar Galactica' and 'Supernatural.' It's nice to go back and rewatch your favorite shows from the beginning. Every time I rewatch a series, it's almost like the first time. Now that I'm a parent, my memory AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE!

There Be Dragons

Mother of Dragons' by Yama Orce (YamaO) at Deviant Art
While channel surfing this weekend I happened upon a movie with a dragon in it. This made me think-- excluding animated films like 'Shrek' or 'How to Train your Dragon,' I haven't really seen that many movies or television shows with dragons.

This in of itself would not be unusual, but we are seriously up to our eyeballs in werewolves and vampires. Why not dragons? Dragons are an essential piece of the fantasy-genre, yet so few films and television shows have featured them. In years past, special effects artists relied on claymation, animatronics, miniatures, or some poor guy walking around in sweaty costume, but now with the prolific use of CGI, why aren't there more dragons?

'Game of Thrones' Lip Sync Parody

I don't usually like these things, but this one is hilarious. The good folks at Bad Lip Reading, who previously brought you parodies of the 'Hunger Games' and 'Twilight' are at it again. This time they have created a spoof of the highly acclaimed 'Game of Thrones.' Check out their trailer for 'Medieval Land Fun-Time World.' Ned Stark (or Eddie) is the manager of a "renaissance-fair" theme park. It's six minutes of the best lip syncing this side of everywhere.

Best Scifi Movies Of 2012

Sorry, but January is a dead zone for movies and television. Everyone knows that January is the month Hollywood's for toxic waste dumping ground. Check out the NY Time's article on it. So unless it has Liam Neeson in it, I won't go see it.

J'adore Sean Bean

Sean Bean as Boromir in 'Fellowship of the Ring'
Sean Bean is the man. He's so much more manly than Chuck Norris. In fact, Sean Bean dies in every movie (or show) he's in. It's inevitable. The enigmatic Bean has died so many times I've lost count. Mind you, most of his roles have been bad guys, but he's still endearing enough to play lovable and loyal characters like Ned Stark in 'Game of Thrones' or Boromir in 'Lord of the Rings.'
