I'm Obsessed With Disney Princess Art

Whether it's Dina Goldstein's provocative live action photographs of "Fallen Princesses," macabre versions of beloved Disney princesses, or Disney princesses reimagined as modern pop culture icons ('The Little Mermaid' as 'Black Widow,' 'Snow White' as 'Wonder Woman,' 'Mulan' as 'Xena: The Warrior Princess,' 'Sleeping Beauty' as 'Daenerys Targaryen', or 'Pocohantas' as 'Katniss Everdeen'), Disney princess art has suddenly become cool. Don't ask me why. And don't ask me why I like it. Perhaps it's years of subliminal Disney-conditioning? I've tried to keep my obsession with Disney princess art under control for the most part, but now there is a new subset: Disney Princesses with none other then...Dr. Who. So it's official, stick a fork in me. I'm done. I love cheesy Disney princess art.

Unhappily Ever After

This piece has been around for a few years, but somehow I never came across it. Provocateur Dina Goldstein has transformed Disney princesses into "real life" caricatures. The piece is an artistic response to the "happily ever after" moniker. After all, life is not a Disney movie. Prince Charming doesn't necessarily swoop in and save the day. Real women face real world challenges that Disney princesses don't face. The piece is cleverly shot through the opiate lens of make believe. The photographs are provocative and purposely so. Goldstein's intent is to illicit an emotion from the viewer: humor, sadness, disgust, anger, etc. Some folks may take offense and admittedly a few of these pictures are offensive. Carter Who?

The long-awaited trailer for John Carter of Mars (now just called John Carter) is finally here.  Taylor Kitsch (of X-Men Origins: Wolverine) stars as the title character and Lynn Collins (also of X-Men Origins) stars as Dejah Thoris, the Princess of Helium.  The rest of the cast include more familiar faces, such as Willem Dafoe, James Purefoy, Dominic West, Bryan Cranston, and Ciaran Hinds. John Carter is a confederate civil war veteran prospecting in the old west when he is mysteriously transported to Mars. While on Mars, Carter discovers an Avatar-like planet with 12-foot tall "green" inhabitants and the beautiful Princess of Helium, Dejah.  John Carter is based on the legendary science fiction anthology, the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Burroughs is best known for the creation of Tarzan.
