X-FILES SNEAK PEEK, "FANNIBAL" HOPE, CRAPPY TRAILERS, + ANTMAN DOUBTS

I am rewatching the 'X-Files' on Netflix in preparation for the'X-Files' (albeit brief) return in January. Admittedly I'm skipping the episodes I didn't like, which thankfully are few and far between. It really takes me back to my young teen and early college years. Nine years of television was a really long time. Perhaps it's the nostalgia that I'm holding on to. I don't know, but I'm obsessed with all things 'X-Files' right now. Check out EW's site for more set photos.

DISSECTING THE NEW SUPERGIRL TRAILER

If you've read my blog then you know that I'm the first person to applaud a new superhero television, especially a new superhero film or tv show with a female lead. In fact, now that I think of it, I don't believe we've had a female-led superhero television show since 'Wonder Woman,' which debuted in the 1975. 1975 as in 40 years ago. Forty years. Seriously 40..., not 30, not 20, not 10, but 40. That's like two generations. Admittedly there was the short lived series called 'Birds of Prey' on the WB in 2002, but that lasted for like a nanosecond. And to be fair, shows like 'Buffy,' 'Xena,' 'Alias,' have certainly taken on superhero-like qualities, but 'Wonder Woman' was truly the last female-led superhero television series.

Agent Carter News, Jupiter Ascending Postponed, Cosplay + More

I'm sure that everyone has heard by now that 'Agent Carter' with Haley Atwell is a go! Yay for Hayley. I'm super excited for this show. Atwell just revealed that Howard Stark himself (Dominic Cooper as seen above bottom right) will also be reprising his role from 'Captain America: The First Avenger' and will be joining her on the new series.

Tom Cruise as Tom Cruise...again, Khal Drogo as Lobo, & She-Hulk Diss

When watching a preview of the new Tom Cruise film, 'Edge of Tomorrow,' I'm reminded that Cruise essentially plays the same character in every movie. Cruise is one of the most typecasted actors. If Cruise is in a film, one thing can be guaranteed-- his character is a strong-willed, moral, yet troubled man, down on his luck, but has the will to overcome, blah blah blah. It doesn't leave a lot of room for creativity.

The crazy thing is that Cruise is actually a good actor. His roles in 'Interview with the Vampire' and 'Rock of Ages' are proof of that. So why doesn't Cruise challenge himself more? I know that he's an a-lister, but similar a-list actors have had much more diverse careers. I for one would like to see Cruise stretch himself in films like 'Collateral.' My favorite Cruise role continues to be 'Interview.' Given Cruise's career trajectory that's not likely to change. I guess we should be thankful, at least he's not pulling a "Nick Cage."

New Godzilla Poster, Jurassic Park Reboot, Falling Skies Returns + Cosplay

The new 'Godzilla' poster looks awesome. Almost as awesome as the Japanese trailer for it. Of course the Japanese trailer would be even better than the one I posted a few days ago. This trailer is a little different as it features the incredible Ken Watabe ('Batman' and 'Inception'). This man is so cool.

Johnny Depp Falters, True Blood Returns, + WonderCon Cosplayers Rule

Not much going on this week except for the latest Johnny Depp bomb, 'Transcendence.' 'Transcendence' is Depp's third flop in a row:  'Dark Shadows,' 'The Lone Ranger,' and now 'Transcendence,' which opened domestically at $11.5 million despite its $100 million budget. 'The Tourist' barely survived with a $16.5 million opening. The reviews are pretty dismal. 'Transcendence is coming in at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Thrones Fun, Jlaw in Mystique Movie?, Cosplay, + More Geek News

Via Facebook
Game of Thrones
Between the months of April and June, there will be lots of Thrones talk. As the season premiere debuted this past Sunday, this week was particularly plentiful for 'Game of Thrones' spoofs and memorabilia. I typically don't do full reviews of television shows or films anymore, but I will post something I find interesting or humorous. If you want to see a great recap of this week's episode, head over to Sati's. She has a great review of 'Two Swords.'

Rabid Fandom, 'GoTs' AutoTune, Reboots, Spoilers, + Trailers

This is my favorite 'Game of Thrones' autotune from @musicalscience, appropriately titled, 'The Dragon's Daughter.' It has all of your favorite characters singing their little hearts out. Yay. It actually has a cool little beat to it.

INSIDE 'GAME OF THRONES' SEASON 4 + SPOILERS

Production Design Featurette - Season 4

Watch a behind the scenes look at 'Game of Thrones' with Production Designer Deborah Riley. Riley created (COUNT THEM) 104 new sets for 'Game of Thrones' Season 4. This doesn't include all of the old standby sets. The featurette is only about 2-1/2 minutes long, but well worth the watch. The set designs and visual landscapes are unlike anything else on television right now. It should come as no surprise that each episode of 'Game of Thrones' cost somewhere around $6 million to make.

'Maleficent' Trailer Looks "Meh"

The 'Sleeping Beauty' Disney cartoon was one of my favorites as a child, so I was (am) really looking forward to the live action version called 'Maleficent.' After the success of the 'Wicked' franchise, 'Maleficent' is told from villain's point of view. Angelina Jolie plays the title role and her makeup and costuming looks absolutely fantastic. I wrote a blog post about it in 2012. I still have high hopes for this movie, but the trailer leaves much to be desired. It is just a teaser trailer, so I'm sure there is more to look forward to. The 'Snow White and the Huntsman' trailer looked awesome and the movie turned out to be 'meh.' So I'll take a bad trailer over a bad movie any day of the week.

Plot"Maleficent explores the untold story of Disney's most iconic villain from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent (Jolie) cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king's newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora (Fanning) is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever." Via Disney.

'Game of Thrones' Lip Sync Parody

I don't usually like these things, but this one is hilarious. The good folks at Bad Lip Reading, who previously brought you parodies of the 'Hunger Games' and 'Twilight' are at it again. This time they have created a spoof of the highly acclaimed 'Game of Thrones.' Check out their trailer for 'Medieval Land Fun-Time World.' Ned Stark (or Eddie) is the manager of a "renaissance-fair" theme park. It's six minutes of the best lip syncing this side of everywhere.

Hilarious "Honest" Trailer From Screen Junkies

Screen Junkies
Screen Junkies got this one right in their 'honest trailer' segment. Admittedly, I enjoyed 'Star Trek: Into the Darkness,' but there were quite a few glitches. One being a pointless scene with the lovely Alice Eve in her undies. Seriously, what was the point? I'm not a prude, but I still don't get it. It made no sense. In fact, even the screenwriter I love to hate, Damon Lindelof ('Lost,' 'Prometheus,' and now 'Star Trek: Into the Darkness') admitted that the scene was absurd. See his apology. Whatev... Check out Screen Junkie's trailer. It's a hoot.

'Gravity' With Sandra Bullock And George Clooney

Must see trailer with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Both are astronauts. Clooney is the veteran, Bullock is the newbie. Things go terribly wrong on a routine spacewalk. I hope this is not another 'Open Water,' a film about a pair of doomed deep sea divers. According to the synopsis they have to go deeper into space to find a way home. I'm curious as to what they find. I'm not sure how astronauts survive without a space shuttle. Alfonso Cuaron, director of 'Children of Men' directs. 'Gravity' "falls" on October 4th.

New Trailer for 'Ender's Game.'

Scifi and fantasy are so easily interchanged these days that it's easy to forget that they are two different things. True scifi films without elements of fantasy are a rarity. 'Ender's Game' is that movie. For those not familiar with 'Ender's Game,' read the sypnosis before you watch the trailer.

New Film From The Director of 'Old Boy.'

'Stoker' is the new psychological horror film by Park Chan-wook (director of 'Old Boy') written by Wentworth Miller. Yeah that guy from 'Prison Break.' Stoker is Chan-wook's first English speaking film and appears to be a well crafted thriller. Chan-wook is no stranger to the genre. So far, the reviews have been pretty good . Check out the trailer.

Another Monstrosity From Bryan Singer

CGI giant in 'Jack the Giant Slayer.'
Oh Bryan Singer destroyer of both the 'X-Men' and the 'Superman' franchise is back in the director's chair. Check out 'Jack the Giant Slayer,' starring Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy, Stanley Tucci, and cutie patootie Nicholas Hoult (Beast from 'X-Men: First Class' and 'A Single Man.'). This really looks like over the top cgi of epic proportions. I may have to remove this from my "view" list. Nicholas Hoult would have been so much better cast as Peeta in 'The Hunger Games.' Josh Hutcherson is not the Peeta I envisioned in the books.

Radar Fail

Ok how did I miss this one? This trailer has been out for a while now. Where was I? I could have made fun of this trailer months ago.

The trailer for '7500' looks really stupid. Somewhere on Flight '7500' an unwanted monstrous passenger lurks on the plane. Seriously? 'Snakes on a Plane' was one thing. That was a campy spoof, but a serious creature feature on a plane? I'm not saying that horror films in tight quarters can't work. Take the film 'Devil' for example, which was set in the confines of an elevator. That filmed worked and it worked well. Likewise, both 'The X-Files' and 'Supernatural' had episodes of supernatural creatures on a plane. But something in '7500' isn't clicking.

Happy Trails - New Horror Trailers

Sinister
There are several new horror flicks coming to a theater near you. The scariest (in my opinion) is the haunted house flick 'Sinister' starring Ethan Hawke. Hawke stars as Ellison, a family man who finds old videos of the home's prior residents. What distinguishes 'Sinister' from other haunted house films, is that the house itself isn't haunted. The haunting is specific to certain object(s), namely the found footage. Thankfully this is not a found footage film like 'Paranormal Activity.' Check out the trailer. It looks truly frightening.
