Leave it Gus Van Sant

Leave it to Gus Van Sant to make Restless.  Restless is a movie about a terminally ill girl Annabel (Mia Wasikowska of Alice in Wonderland); Enoch, a boy who enjoys funerals  (Henry Hopper and son of the late Dennis Hopper); and Hiroshi, a ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot from WWII (Ryo Kase of Letters of Iwo Jima).  The film reminds me a of Harold and Maude from the 1970s, which was morbidly sentimental, in an interesting way.
Van Sant is well-known for his unconventional style and quirky characters.  His best known films are Milk, ElephantGood Will Hunting, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, My Own Private Idaho, etc.  Van Sant is one of those directors who people either really like or really hate.

Restless is set for wide release September 16, 2011.

  1. Oh man, this sounds like a winner to me....
I kind of like Gus Van Sant.

    Ever seen Last Days???

  2. I really like him as well. Every now and then he's hit or miss, but then he shoots one out of the ballpark. I remember really liking My Own Private Idaho when I was a teenager. I liked Elephant too.

  4. I am quite wary out Restless, despite loving Gus Van Sant (I could go on about My Own Private Idaho until the cows come home.)

Not sure if this one will be a home run or not, but I'd like to think it will be good - so here's hoping!

  5. @Angry Lurker-- It's certainly something I've never seen before. I don't think I've ever seen a film depict a kamikaze pilot ghost.

It's certainly a subject that interests me. Memorial Day before last, I spent all day watching WWII in HD on the history channel.

  6. @Cherokee-- Yep. He can be hit or miss, but I may give this one a chance.

  7. I always have room for Van Sant, so I will definitely give it a go even though the trailer indicates that it is just a happy-go-lucky romcom, but from experience, I know never to trust a trailer.

  8. Yeah I don't do rom-coms. Hopefully it's not one of those. Romantic tragedies--those I do.

  9. Sounds different but still interesting! I'm looking forward to it.
