Johnny Depp Falters, True Blood Returns, + WonderCon Cosplayers Rule

Not much going on this week except for the latest Johnny Depp bomb, 'Transcendence.' 'Transcendence' is Depp's third flop in a row:  'Dark Shadows,' 'The Lone Ranger,' and now 'Transcendence,' which opened domestically at $11.5 million despite its $100 million budget. 'The Tourist' barely survived with a $16.5 million opening. The reviews are pretty dismal. 'Transcendence is coming in at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I like Depp. He's a great actor and he's an A-lister. He doesn't need to take every quirky role that's offered to him. I haven't been a Brad Pitt fan since I was 17 years old, but I have to give Pitt credit where credit is due. Pitt has grown choosier as his career has progressed. This is how it's supposed to be. The more established an actor is, the more selective they can be. Depp needs to start getting selective or his agent needs to be. I would love to see Depp in another indie gem like 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' or 'Benny and June.' Please Johnny, no more pirates and no more Tim Burton films.

Trailers
Oh 'True Blood,' the show I love to hate. I've begrudgingly watched this show for the past six years and I'm glad Season Seven will be its last. The show is so over the top and not in a good way. You can find more speculation about 'True Blood' Season Seven here.

The new 'Godzilla' movie looks better and better every time I catch a glimpse of it. The trailers look great and are reminiscent of the original 1954 'Godzilla' that ravaged Japan over and over again. The less the remake looks like the 1998 Roland Emmerich monstrosity the better.

Cosplay
This year's Wondercon Cosplay is just so good this year. I'm a huge cosplay fan and occasional participant. I'm never as creative as these people though. I wish I were. Check out the rest of these cosplayers. They are seriously brilliant.

  1. Is Eric still dead on True Blood? I barely remember last season and he was one of the few reasons I watched that trainwreck.

Depp is seriously close to Cage's level of sell out.

    1. I don't know. I know his presence in season 7 is up in the air. What's the point of watching without Eric? The writers on that show are the worst. Seriously, I want to beg them to never write for a major production like that again.

Great comparison to Cage. It was not so long ago that I was a Cage fan before his career took a nose dive.

    2. To be fair at least Cage's new movies are hilarious, Depp's are just boring :)

  2. Goood post- I agree with what you say, the skill is in choosing the role.

  3. Poor Johnny Depp. I've never been a huge fan of his but it's strange how his career has hit a dry spell. Transcendence looked interesting but it seemed to be trying to hard to prove itself. I didn't expect it to open to $16mil though.
OMG, True Blood. When Godric died, I left that show for good. The storylines became too melodramatic for me and wasn't growing. The show taking on a Walking Dead isolated format for season 7 seems pretty neat though.
So excited for Godzilla this summer! I love me some cheesy terrible blockbusters but of all the ones I love, I cannot stomach the 1998 Godzilla. That one is all shades of wrong. :)

    1. I agree completely Katy. 'Transcendence' did look interesting. I like Kate Mara a lot. I believe she was in the movie too.

I've hate watched 'True Blood' for the last six years. I can't believe I managed to watch it. The last few seasons have been so terrible.

I am getting super excited about 'Godzilla.' It looks like so much fun.

  4. Always a red shirt!
Transcendence is just getting destroyed by critics. And you saw my review of The Lone Ranger. The last hit Depp had was Rango.
Godzilla is going to rock. Counting down the days...

    1. Yes!! I love redshirts. Yes, I didn't think 'The Lone Ranger' was all that bad, but it was more of Johnny Depp as Tonto, with 'The Lone Ranger' as the sidekick.

I'm really looking fwd to 'Godzilla.' The trailers look great.

  5. I was shocked at the box office results of Transcendence. I kept thinking how bad could it be, but it's apparently really bad. The sad thing is director Wally Pfister may not get a second chance and he's a brilliant cinematographer. Maybe he should just stick with that. odzilla? Yes please.

    1. Oh he's a great cinematographer. He's done great work. Sometimes when people move to the director's chair it doesn't always work.

I'm really looking fwd to Godzilla!
